So genetics can be a factor (such as inheriting a mental illness) as well as environment (modeling behavior of a parent or other close relative or even the phenomenon of a "rash" of suicides in teenagers after one classmate commits suicide). Of course, mental illness is a major factor, but also "modeling" this behavior by a parent or close relative is an important indicator a person might consider suicide a "coping" technique (albeit a very dysfunctional one).
